Which drug is Viagra’s biggest competitor?
The blockbuster drug Viagra, a generic version of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagel, is now dominating the global drug market with sales of more than $20 billion a year.
But the drug’s biggest rival in the U.S. is another erectile-disorder drug, Vioxx, which costs about $60,000 for a 10-day supply.
The latest data from Mylan shows that Viox accounted for about half of all the erectilatory-suppression drugs sold in the United States in 2018, the first time that’s happened since 2007.
The data, obtained by The Wall St. Journal, comes amid growing concerns about the drug Viagos and its effectiveness.
The Drug Enforcement Administration last month warned doctors against prescribing Viagra for erectile problems, saying the drug was more likely to cause heart attacks and strokes.
The U.K. Health Protection Agency said it was investigating the possibility of a potential link between Viagra and cardiovascular diseases.
“Viagra has long been associated with erectile troubles, with some studies showing an association between the drug and erectile complaints,” said Mylan CEO Heather Bresch.
“However, we have not seen a definitive link between this medication and heart attack or stroke, or with other erectile disorders.”
The drug’s makers are betting that if the drug is marketed correctly, it could lead to an explosion in sales.
But with Viagra now the most popular erectile stimulant in the world, that could also lead to a downturn in sales for other erectilators.
“It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but there’s a risk that if people start to misuse it more, the market could actually collapse,” said Robert D. Shugart, an associate professor of health policy and management at Georgetown University.
Mylan’s Shugert said the company’s research showed that more than half of erectile issues can be treated with Viagels.
But for some people, the pain is worse.
“A lot of people get erectile difficulties with Viags,” Shuger said.
“The only way to really control that is to have a drug that can be given in a more gradual fashion.”
The new Mylan data shows that while Viagra accounted for some 80% of all erectile drugs sold last year, it was a mere 4% of the market for other drugs.
The other drugs that were more popular than Viagra were: Cialis (for pain relief), Cefuroxime (for muscle relaxants), and Tylenol (for mood stabilizers).
Some erectile medications, like Viagra or Viageli, are available over-the-counter and can be purchased over the counter in pharmacies.
But Mylan says most erectile medicines are prescribed by doctors.
A generic version, Viagra VX, is available over the phone, and the company has plans to release a generic versions of both the old and new drugs within the next two years.
But even with the new drug competition, Shugarty said the firm still expects to make money from the firm’s erectile drug business.
“We are not seeing any impact to sales or revenue from the Viagra brand or any other generic drug,” he said.
