Why is Viagra under investigation?

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched an investigation into Viagra’s drug development process after it was reported that its makers had failed to disclose crucial details on its safety and efficacy, the Associated Press reported.

Viagra was approved by the FDA in 2013 and has been licensed by over 30 countries, including the US.

It is the first pharmaceutical approved to treat erectile dysfunction, a condition marked by difficulty in achieving or maintaining an erection, the AP reported.

The FDA is currently investigating whether Viagra has the potential to cause serious adverse reactions in people with other conditions, such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease, the agency said in a statement.

The company is also investigating whether it could interfere with blood flow to the brain, according to the AP.

The agency said it has received complaints about the drug’s manufacturing process from consumers who believe they have experienced side effects, including dizziness, insomnia, fatigue, headaches and anxiety, the paper said.

The AP has reached out to the FDA and the company for comment.
